Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors® Names Bill Grange the 2016 Realtor® Good Neighbor

PORTLAND, Ore.— The Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors® will present Bill Grange, a broker with Windermere Stellar, the 2016 Realtor® Good Neighbor Award at the May 26th Portland First Citizen Banquet at The Nines. PMAR’s Realtor® Good Neighbor Award honors a Realtor® who has made an extraordinary commitment to improving the quality of life in his or her community.

For more than eight years, Grange has volunteered as a Chemo Pal for the Children’s Cancer Association.  This award-winning program pairs trained, adult mentors with kids undergoing treatment for serious illnesses. Chemo Pals give kids a caring, trusted friend to look forward to seeing and allows them to have someone in their corner when they need it most. The average match lasts 12 months or for the duration of a child’s treatment. Grange has been matched as a Chemo Pal with five different children facing life threatening diseases.

As a mentor, Grange visits his Chemo Kiddo in the hospital to play games, read stories, listen to music, share hobbies or simply offer the comfort of companionship. He helps relieve the anxiety, loneliness and isolation experienced by children in treatment. His role also supports families, giving parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, talk with doctors or spend time with their other children.

When the opportunity presents itself, Grange also meets his Kiddo outside the hospital setting to share time at OMSI, go miniature golfing or enjoy a Blazer game. He says, “By providing friendship and being a supportive adult when these kids need it most, I help bring joy, laughter and smiles to these children when isolated from their friends and don’t have strength to attend school.” Grange feels no greater joy than bringing a smile to the faces of his Chemo Kiddo and seeing the gratitude of their parents for the service he provides.

In addition to the time he spends with the children, he has participated in numerous fundraising events such as Valentine’s Day for CCA, the One Day/One Friend/One Year Chemo Pal Fundraiser and the Grape Vine Bike Ride. He has personally raised over $8,500 for the One Day/One Friend/One Year Chemo Pal fundraiser over the past two years. These funds are used to support the Chemo Pal Mentor program.

In honor of his impressive work in the community, $1,000 will be donated by the Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors® to Grange’s charity of choice, Chemo Pal Mentor Program.

At the Portland First Citizen Banquet, Barb Attridge and Karen Fishel will be honored with the 2016 Portland First Citizen award. The Future First Citizen Award and a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to Clare McLeod of St. Mary’s Academy. More information on the First Citizen Award can be found at www.pmar.org/firstcitizen.
